Tip Calculator

Calculate tip amount and split the bill. Determine tip percentage, total cost, and per-person share.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1

    Enter bill amount

    Use pre-tax subtotal if you tip on food/drink only.

  2. 2

    Set tip percentage

    18–20% is common in the US for table service; adjust for quality.

  3. 3

    Add party size

    Split total evenly or per person as needed.

  4. 4

    Pay total

    Use per-person amount when splitting cash or P2P apps.

How It Is Calculated

Tip = bill × (percent / 100). Total = bill + tip. Per person = total ÷ party size.

Tip = Bill × (r/100) | Total = Bill + Tip | Each = Total / n

Worked examples

$85 bill, 20% tip

Tip $17 → total $102; four people pay $25.50 each.

Post-tax tipping

$85 subtotal + $7 tax = $92; 18% on subtotal = $15.30 tip (not on tax).

Large party auto-gratuity

Some venues add 18–22% for groups of 6+—check the receipt first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip?

Standard tip: 15-20% of bill. Good service: 18-20%. Excellent service: 20-25%. Poor service: 10-15% or less. Adjust based on service quality, location, and local customs. Some restaurants include service charge—check your bill. Tipping culture varies by country.

How is tip calculated?

Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip Percentage / 100). Total = Bill + Tip. Example: $50 bill, 18% tip: Tip = $50 × 0.18 = $9. Total = $50 + $9 = $59. The calculator does this automatically and splits per person if needed.

Should I tip on tax?

Generally, tip on pre-tax amount (subtotal). However, many people tip on total including tax for simplicity. Both are acceptable. Example: $50 subtotal + $4 tax = $54 total. Tip 18% on $50 = $9, or on $54 = $9.72. Difference is usually small.

How do I split the bill?

Per Person = Total / Number of People. Example: $59 total, 4 people: $59 / 4 = $14.75 per person. The calculator shows total, tip, and per-person amount. Make sure everyone pays their share, including tip. Some apps can split bills automatically.
